xtreme weather, driven by La Niña phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, has triggered widespread flooding and landslides across various parts of the archipelago in recent days, affecting thousands and claiming lives.

On Sunday, torrential rain caused damage to dikes along the Tuntang and Klitih rivers in Grobogan, Central Java, leading to flooding in 21 villages within the regency.

Floodwaters, ranging from 10 to 100 centimeters deep, inundated hundreds of homes, impacting more than 2,100 people and forcing 150 to evacuate.

The flooding also submerged railway tracks in the region, causing state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to cancel and reroute five train services that pass through the regency.

Heavy downpours have also wrecked dikes along rivers in Purwakarta and the neighboring Bandung regency in West Java, triggering floods that inundated more than 8,000 homes, six schools and 19 houses of worship in the past few days.

The situation worsened due to damage to several sluice gates throughout the city, making it difficult for the floodwaters to be redirected back to the Siak River, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
