View all search resultsA teacher in East Java has caught the attention of human rights activists following reports that they forcefully shaved the heads of more than a dozen students as punishment for the students' failure to wear an internal component of the hijab.
The country, which has set July 13 as the start of the 2020-2021 school year in its academic calendar, will allow gradual reopening of high schools before allowing elementary schools and kindergartens to follow suit.
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) says that most students were unaware of the issues behind the protest, and that some had simply been lured into taking a "trip to Jakarta".
The children face the very real possibility that they may not be able to attend school under the school zoning system, which was introduced five years after their families were relocated to the low-cost apartments in 2012.
Martono, the school’s acting principal, said after the protest that the school’s management would investigate the case, adding that the school would first try to seek clarification from the student and the teacher.
