The government says the US has expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s position on bilateral trade and lauded Jakarta’s decision to get into negotiations early, as a high-ranking delegation wraps up talks in Washington, DC.
Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto, the head of delegation, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati have been in the United States since last week negotiating the proposed 32 percent tariffs the US wants to impose on Indonesia. These tariffs have been put on hold for 90 days.
The US is Indonesia’s second largest export market after China. Experts have warned US trade policy could weigh on the archipelago’s gross domestic product growth and to some extent lead to layoffs in impacted industries.
The imposition of US tariffs has spotlighted that now is the time to conclude negotiations on the IEU-CEPA as an agreement between equal partners that offers mutual benefits for both Indonesia and the EU.
