The capital’s carnival will celebrate its anniversary and promote the upcoming Asian Games.
n conjunction with Jakarta’s 491st anniversary, the provincial administration will hold Jakarnaval on Sunday, July 8. The event will take place around City Hall and the National Monument (Monas).
The carnival is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., with onstage music performances. Among the performers scheduled to appear are singer Rizky Febian and pop groups Saykoji, The Dance Company and others.
Jakarnaval, which is returning after a two-year hiatus, also aims to promote the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Para Games, slated to be held later this year. Around 4,000 participants from various communities are expected to attend the event, from Abang None Jakarta (pageant) contestants, who are also cultural and tourism ambassadors of Jakarta, to regional working units (SKPD) of the capital.
Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said to kompas.com that Betawi cultural icons such as ondel-ondel (giant effigies) and tanjidor (traditional Betawi instrument) performances would enliven the carnival, along with the likes of hip-hop dance and parkour performances.
