National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia announced that 203 of its airplanes would be equipped with free Wi-Fi.
Antara news agency reported that the airplanes included 50 units operated by Citilink Indonesia, 103 units by Garuda Indonesia and 50 units by Sriwijaya Air.
Garuda’s low-cost subsidiary, Citilink, launched on Friday its free Wi-Fi. Juliandra Nurtjahjo, Citilink Indonesia’s director, said features in the 203 planes would be identical to those in Citilink.
For the service, Citilink collaborates with in-flight wireless internet service provider PT Mahata Aero Technology (Mahata), which will provide an GX Aviation System. It allows passengers to roam the internet and social media for the duration of the flight.

The service is owned and operated by Inmarsat in cooperation with Lufthansa Technik as the hardware, technique, design and certification provider, while Lufthansa System provides software integration setup.
M. Fitriansyah, PT Aero Teknologi’s director, said focus was being placed on finishing the Wi-Fi installation on Citilink’s airplanes. Installation on Garuda and Sriwijaya’s planes will start when routine maintenance is performed, so as to avoid operational disruptions.
