Borobudur sprayed with disinfectant, closed to public until late March

he entire surface of Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, was sprayed with disinfectant on Monday in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at the tourist attraction.
As reported by kompas.com, Borobudur Conservation Agency (BKB) attendants sprayed all the surfaces of the temple, including stupas, walls and floors, with a special disinfectant that is safe for both humans and the temple’s masonry.
According to BKB conservation section head Yudi Suhartono, the disinfectant contains alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, glycerol and Aqua Dest. "We had this disinfectant delivered specially from Yogyakarta. It is safe for both humans and the temple."

Zone I of the temple was sprayed thoroughly on Monday, particularly parts that were often touched by visitors, such as the stupas and handrails.
About 35 liters of disinfectant were required for one pass of the temple. The spraying was conducted by attendants wearing special protective clothing, face masks, gloves and goggles.
Borobudur is currently closed to the public until March 29. Its tourism packages, namely Sunrise, Sunset and Manohara Borobudur, are not available for purchase.
"The spraying will be conducted periodically; we haven't decided on the time limit. It will depend on the situation. We could spray it again prior to opening the temple to the public," said Yudi.
Following the two-week closure imposed by the Jakarta administration, several other tourist destinations, including the Maritime Museum in North Jakarta, Onrust Island in the Thousand Islands, Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta and Ancol Dreamland in North Jakarta, are also cleaning and sterilizing public areas in an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus.
