Maximizing tourism and creative economy for sustainable growth

T

he tourism and the creative economy must be maximized to ensure sustainable growth that considers public interests, said Tourism and Creative Economy Minister/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno.

He made the statement in his virtual address at the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Blue Economy High-Level Dialogue themed “Forging A New Era of Sustainable Growth", held on Oct. 9 as a side event of the AIS Forum Summit 2023 in Nusa Dua, Bali.

"The integration of tourism and the creative economy is key," said minister Sandiaga.

Toward this end, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry (Kemenparekraf) has introduced various programs and policies to promote the realization of high-quality tourism that is, most importantly, sustainable. Key policies include reducing carbon emissions and preserving natural resources, culture and local traditions.

Meanwhile, development of the creative economy focuses on creative spaces, innovation and strengthening protection of intellectual property.

"We have several tourism polytechnics that provide training and education to empower communities with skills and abilities that support sustainable practices," the minister continued.

Sandiaga also urged all parties to continue innovating and collaborating to focus on their long-term vision and commitment to sustainable development.

"I believe that by integrating creativity, culture and sustainable principles, we can unlock growth potential while preserving our diversity and natural wealth," said Sandiaga.

Rizki Handayani, Industry and Investment Deputy at the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, said the ministry was strongly committed to exploring best practices in decarbonization and climate action in the tourism sector, and that it had a strong sense of responsibility in creating sustainability and climate resilience.

Last year’s signing of the Glasgow Declaration was proof of the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry/Agency’s commitment to aligning their policies with Indonesia’s climate action goals.

Together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the ministry has developed a decarbonization road map for the tourism sector targeting three subsectors: tourist destinations, accommodations, and travel and tourism.

"In this initial initiative, the road map focuses on two aspects: energy consumption and waste production. These two aspects were selected based on the fact that both of them contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions," said Rizki.

She also expressed her hope that the AIS Blue Economy High-Level Dialogue would pave the way to sustainable tourism development and sustainable natural resources management for future generations.

"We hope this event will be the starting point for more partnerships in the future to create a tourism sector that is resilient and climate-friendly," said Rizki Handayani.
