The senior investment minister has announced that Indonesia is doubling down on its commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by holding a dedicated event on climate funding in November.

Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan said in a joint statement on April 18 that the government would be hosting the inaugural BloombergNEF (BNEF) Net Zero Summit alongside the G20 Summit in Bali in November, with the express goal of exploring business opportunities to achieve carbon neutrality.

In the same statement, BNEF said the summit “will bring together 300 global and Indonesian business leaders and investors to explore growth opportunities in the transition to a net zero future”.

The BNEF Summit is a one-off leaders’ meeting scheduled for Nov. 12, just a day before the Business 20 (B20) Summit on Nov. 13-14, followed by the G20 Summit on the next two days.

Luhut said Indonesia wanted the world to be carbon neutral by 2050 and keep global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with its G20 presidency’s priority goal on the transition to sustainable energy.

He also expressed his expectations that the BNEF Summit would spark discussions on how to reach carbon neutrality sooner and encourage post-pandemic recovery.

“We will use [the G20 summit] to expand connections and collaborations that were previously limited to only the private and public sectors in Indonesia. Let’s recover together, recover stronger,” he said in a press statement earlier this week, when the new summit was unveiled in the United States.
