Vice President Ma’ruf Amin is scheduled to attend and deliver Indonesia’s National Statement at COP27 in Egypt, which has been dubbed the “implementation the Conference of the Parties" (COP), although activists are concerned that this year climate summit may be less impactful than last year’s COP26.
ice President Ma’ruf Amin is scheduled to attend and deliver Indonesia’s National Statement at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, that has been dubbed the “implementation COP,” although activists are concerned that the COP27 may be less impactful than last year’s COP26.
Vice presidential spokesman Masduki Baidlowi said that Ma’ruf’s address at COP27 would urge developed countries to contribute more in fighting climate change, which had actually been spurred by emissions from industrialized countries.
“It’s only fair that we build [the fight against climate change] together more equally. Second, Indonesia represents archipelagic countries that will become the first victims when climate change and global warming become worse,” Masduki said on Friday.
The Vice President is expected to attend the high level segment of COP27 on Nov. 7-8 and, according to the conference’s provisional list of speakers, he is scheduled to speak at around 5 p.m. on Nov. 7.
Ma’ruf’s attendance at COP27 will be on the last leg of his working visits in the Middle East, as he is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi on Nov. 1-2, Dubai on Nov. 3-4 and the Egyptian capital Cairo on Nov. 5-6.
Masduki said that while attending COP27, the Vice President might also conduct bilateral meetings from representatives of like-minded countries, but added there was no fixed schedule of such meetings if there were any.
COP27 is also held amidst rising geopolitical tensions and coincides with the Group of 20 Summit, which Indonesia will host as part of its G20 presidency this year, in Bali on Nov. 15-16.
