T

he United States government is ready to work with the new administration under the leadership of Prabowo Subianto once his election win is certified by the General Elections Commission (KPU), the White House has said.

Spokesman for the US National Security Council John Kirby said in a press briefing on Tuesday that the White House was closely monitoring the ongoing vote count, which so far put Defense Minister Prabowo in the lead, and once he was declared winner, the Joe Biden administration would start working on maintaining the already strong ties between the two countries.

"We're closely following the ongoing vote count. We understand that Minister Subianto has a significant lead. We've had excellent [relations] since his time as defense minister and if he is in fact finally elected then we look forward to continuing our relationship," Kirby told reporters.

Kirby was responding to a question when the White House would soon send a congratulatory note to Prabowo for his likely election as President.

Leaders of a number of neighboring countries have congratulated Prabowo for his lead in the official vote count and pledged to work with his new administration.

So far, only the US State Department has issued a statement on the Indonesian election, saying the election was "a testament to the durability and strength of the Indonesian people's commitment to the democratic process and electoral institutions".
