T

he Indonesian Military (TNI) has declared its readiness for a deployment on a peacekeeping mission to the Gaza Strip following a statement from Defense Minister and president-elect Prabowo Subianto on Indonesia’s willingness to send such a force to enforce a cease-fire in the war-torn region.

“The TNI is ready to carry out peace operations under the flag of the United Nations wherever or whenever it is ordered by the government,” TNI spokesperson Maj. Gen. Nugraha Gumilar said on Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.

In his speech at Asia's premier security and defense forum, the Shangri-La Dialogue, on Saturday in Singapore, Prabowo expressed the country’s willingness to help push for peace in Palestine, including by sending peacekeeping forces if needed and requested by the UN.

“When needed and when requested by the [UN], we are prepared to contribute significant peacekeeping forces to maintain and monitor this prospective cease-fire, as well as providing protection and security to all parties and to all sides,” the incumbent defense minister said.

Indonesia has regularly sent troops to the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission to safeguard the border between southern Lebanon and Israel.

Prabowo also urged a comprehensive investigation into the humanitarian disaster in Rafah, where the Israeli military launched assaults in the past week that killed dozens of Palestinian refugees. Israel struck Rafah despite an International Court of Justice (ICJ) order for Israel to halt its offensive in Gaza's border area with Egypt.
