resident-elect Prabowo Subianto’s overture about sending Indonesian peacekeepers to Gaza and calling for an international probe has earned him praise as he works through a busy itinerary at Asia’s premier defense summit, which also included high-level talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Prabowo, currently the defense minister, expressed Indonesia’s willingness to aid in the peace process in a speech at Asia’s premier security and defense forum, the Shangri-La Dialogue, on Saturday in Singapore. The forum was a place for global leaders in the security landscape to broach crucial topics that continue to impact the goal of world peace.
Speaking for the third consecutive year at the forum, Prabowo brought up the “tragic events” that have transpired in Rafah, a Palestinian city in the southern Gaza strip which has seen deadly Israeli strikes over the past week. Rafah, where over a million Palestinians have been sheltering, is a highly critical gateway for humanitarian aid to Palestine.
Prabowo said the latest three-phase proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, which was outlined by United States President Joe Biden, was “an important right step”.
“When needed and when requested by the United Nations, we are prepared to contribute significant peacekeeping forces to maintain and monitor this prospective ceasefire as well as providing protection and security to all parties and to all sides,” the former army general said.
Biden said on Friday that Israel had proposed a fresh Gaza ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages, Reuters reported. Palestine’s militant group Hamas said it "considers positively" the Israeli plan.
But Israel continued to battle and bombard Hamas in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that "Israel's conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas's military and governing capabilities, the freeing of all hostages and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel".
