T

he Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) are hunting the culprit in the killing of an Indonesian migrant worker at a private palm oil estate in Sepupok, Miri, Sarawak state.

The victim, identified only as GF, 40, from West Nusa Tenggara, was shot at 8 a.m. on July 29.

There were no eyewitnesses to the shooting itself; however, four fellow Indonesian workers at the same plantation heard gunshots.

When the four witnesses went to investigate the source of the firing, they found the victim lying on the ground.

GF was visibly injured but still breathing and the witnesses quickly transported him to a nearby hut. Before losing consciousness, GF informed them that a thief had entered his hut.

The PDRM reported that the injuries on the victim’s body were caused by a lantak (homemade firearm) that fired buckshot, resulting in multiple wounds to the victim’s body.

The Miri District Police have taken statements from the four Indonesian witnesses and are searching for the suspect. However, the dense jungle terrain surrounding the crime scene has complicated the search efforts.

The Indonesian Consul General in Kuching R. Sigit Witjaksono said that Indonesian representatives had already met with the Miri District Police chief Asst. Comr. Alexson Naga Anak Chabu, on Monday, at the Miri District Police headquarters to discuss the case.

The victim's body is currently being held at Miri General Hospital.

Sigit said the plantation owner was arranging for the body to be sent back for burial in the victim's hometown.
