SEAN has agreed to promote safe artificial intelligence systems with the United States and to eradicate online crimes with China, which has become a prominent issue in Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia.
The commitments were laid out in two separate statements following meetings between ASEAN and its partners in Vientiane, Laos on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit last week.
China and ASEAN members in their joint statement recognized the growing trend of telecommunication network fraud and online gambling cases in Southeast Asia, which have become a “regional nuisance”.
‘[These crimes] have seriously endangered the lives and property of the people in the region [and] social stability,” they said.
They encouraged strengthening the cooperation between law enforcement in China and ASEAN countries and supporting intra-regional collaboration to combat digital crimes through each country’s police force.
China and ASEAN members urged countries in the region to set up anti-fraud and anti-gambling centers to help cross-country coordination.
In an earlier statement released by the US and ASEAN following their meeting on Friday, the US laid down its digital security commitment with ASEAN members through the promotion of a “safe, secure and trustworthy AI”.
