S

enior minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra has proposed repatriating Hambali, the alleged mastermind behind the deadly 2002 Bali bombings, from the United States detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, sparking strong reactions from experts.

The coordinating law, human rights, immigration and correctional services minister raised the idea on Friday at an event hosted by legal journalists, Antara reported.

“Hambali is still an Indonesian citizen. No matter how guilty our citizens are abroad [if proven so], we must still pay attention to them,” Yusril said.

“Hambali has been held at Guantanamo Bay for quite some time, but he has yet to be put on trial,” he added.

Hambali, whose real name is Encep Nurjaman, was captured in Thailand in 2003. He has reportedly been held at Guantanamo since 2006.

Yusril said he planned to discuss the idea with President Prabowo Subianto.

Last month, the Pentagon repatriated two Malaysian nationals, Mohammed Farik bin Amin and Mohammed Nazir bin Lep, after they pleaded guilty to conspiracy and some other offenses in the 2002 Bali bombings and provided sworn testimony that prosecutors plan to use in the future against the alleged mastermind Hambali.
