The crisis in Myanmar has posed serious challenges both within and outside the country, Sugiono said, while also appealing for foreign partners to channel assistance through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center).
On the sidelines of the WEF summit, where over 50 heads of state have gathered since the start of the week to discuss economic collaboration amid an increasingly challenging world, several international actors grouped to discuss a resolution of the Myanmar conflict.
The limited dialogue group was attended by, among others, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, UN Special Envoy for Myanmar Christine Schraner-Burgener, International Red Cross president Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, as well as representatives from several international NGOs.
Sugiono’s first attendance at the international summit saw Myanmar diplomacy high on the agenda, according to a release from the Foreign Ministry, noting that the four-year crisis has posed challenges to stability in the Southeast Asia region. They include a surge in transnational crime among ASEAN countries, as well as an uptick in opium production in Myanmar.
