ix Indonesians have died during an umrah (minor haj) journey in Saudi Arabia following a traffic accident on Thursday involving a bus carrying pilgrims, the Foreign Ministry has announced.

A bus carrying Indonesian pilgrims was involved in a collision on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. local time at Wadi Qudeid, on the road between Mecca and Medina located around 150 kilometers from Jeddah. The bus overturned and caught fire after the collision, according to the ministry.

Another 14 pilgrims were injured during the accident and received treatment at a nearby hospital.

After the accident, the Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah dispatched a team from the citizen protection division to check on the location as well as coordinate with local authorities, hospitals and tour leaders to ensure the condition of affected pilgrims.

“The Foreign Ministry is coordinating with the Religious Affairs Ministry and the umrah travel agency responsible for the pilgrims to obtain complete data on affected Indonesian citizens and their families,” the ministry wrote in a statement issued on Friday.

It added that ministry officials had notified the families about the accident, while expressing condolences for pilgrims who had died.

“[We] will continue to assist in the handling of the injured victims,” the ministry continued.
