he government has voiced strong support for Cambodian law enforcement following the arrest of 339 Indonesians during a sweeping crackdown on scam operations last week, adding that it was ready to intensify cooperation as the region grapples with a vast, transnational network of cybercriminals.
In a statement on Monday, the Foreign Ministry said the number of Indonesians working at scam centers in Cambodia had increased significantly in recent years, many lured abroad by false promises of high-paying jobs.
The arrests come as part of an intensified anti-scam campaign launched by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, who ordered the military last week to escalate nationwide raids targeting so-called cyber sweatshops, warning of potential job losses from a failure to address the ever-growing issue.
The raids have now extended to nine of Cambodia’s 25 provinces, according to AFP, with authorities so far detaining 2,780 individuals from several countries aside from Indonesia including China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Korea and Vietnam.
During a meeting in the Cambodian capital with Senior Minister in Charge of Special Missions Chhay Sinarith, who is also secretary of the Committee for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia Santo Darmosumarto expressed Jakarta’s support for Phnom Penh’s actions.
“Resolving transnational cybercrimes requires close cooperation between all affected countries,” said the ambassador, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
