ermany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has emphasized Berlin’s commitment to monitoring the security landscape in the Indo-Pacific with a particular interest in the Taiwan Strait, warning against any acts that could escalate tensions in the region.
Synergy between Indo-Pacific countries and the European Union both at the bilateral and multilateral level is key to navigating the current complicated geopolitical landscape, Germany’s top diplomat and Foreign Minister Sugiono said after a meeting on Wednesday in Jakarta.
Wadephul kick-started his two-day business and diplomatic visit to Indonesia with a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono at the Foreign Ministry’s office in Jakarta on Wednesday at noon.
Jakarta is the final stop of his first Asia tour following Japan, after taking on Germany’s top diplomatic position in May, a trip aimed at reaffirming Berlin’s commitment to further economic and security cooperation.

After the meeting with Sugiono, Wadephul told reporters that both Germany and Indonesia were on the same page with regard to adherence to international law.
“We discussed the international situation, which greatly concerns us. [...] We are closely watching the situation here in the Indo-Pacific, and particularly in the Taiwan Strait,” the German minister said.
