oreign Minister Sugiono attended on Sunday the first day of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto, who has opted to remain in Jakarta because of the widespread disturbances.

Sugiono arrived in the northern China port city of Tianjin on Sunday afternoon and later attended a state banquet hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan in Tianjin.

“Indonesia’s presence as a guest of the chair [China] is an important recognition of our strategic role on the global stage,” Sugiono said on Instagram on Monday.

“I am also honored to join the welcoming banquet,” he said, sharing photos of him shaking hands or talking with other guests during the event in China.

The banquet marked the start of the two-day summit, where Sugiono will be joined by Russia's Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia.

The CSO started as a security-focused bloc consisting of six Eurasian nations, but has since expanded to 10 permanent members, such as India and Pakistan, and 16 dialogue and observer countries in recent years.

Indonesia is not a member nor a dialogue partner of the CSO.
