T

he Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka was continuing to monitor the security situation in Nepal to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, as the massive anti-government protests entered their third day.

The diplomatic mission in the Bangladeshi capital has also issued an advisory, warning Indonesians in Nepal to steer clear of large gatherings and stay informed through local news broadcasts and official statements.

The anti-government demonstrations began on Monday in Kathmandu, triggered by the government’s ban on social media, driven by a group of angry youths calling themselves the “Gen Z” movement, AFP reported.

But they escalated into a nationwide outpouring of rage on Tuesday after at least 19 people were killed and hundreds injured in a deadly crackdown, with protesters setting government buildings on fire.

“In response, the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, which is also accredited in Nepal, has coordinated and communicated with local authorities, the Indonesian honorary consul in Nepal and the Indonesian community in the country,” Judha Nugraha, the ministry’s citizen protection director, said in a statement on Wednesday.

No fatalities or injuries among Indonesians in Nepal had been reported so far, he said.
