T

he Indonesian Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) team continued competing at the FIG World Challenge Cup 2025 in Szombathely, Hungary, despite losing teammate Naufal Takdir Al Bari, who died during a training session in Russia.

“The Indonesian MAG gymnasts competed in such a brokenhearted condition after losing their best friend and teammate, Naufal, who passed away in Penza, Russia,” the team said in a press release on Friday.

“The sorrow is so deep, but the gymnasts decided to keep moving and to transform [the tragedy] into a source of power.”

Gymnasts Abiyu Raffi, M. Aprizal, Agung Suci Tanto and Satria Tri Wira Yudha are accompanied by coach M. Tri Saputra at the national training center program.

The tryout event in Szombathely is an important part of their preparations for international events such as the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships to be held in Jakarta on Oct. 19-25, the 2025 Southeast Asian Games scheduled for Dec. 9-20 in Thailand and the long journey to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“We faced many challenges in Hungary since the first day. We heard Naufal’s conditions dropped but suddenly we had to conduct podium training,” gymnast Satria said, as quoted by the release.

“The next day we had to compete and then we heard that Naufal had passed away. We were required to stay focused on the competition in Hungary.”
