ndonesian religious groups and civil society organizations rallied in unity on Tuesday to show solidarity with the Palestinian struggle as the Gaza war entered its second year, voicing support for a youth-led mass rally and urging the government to resist pro-Zionist narratives and “normalization” efforts amid doubts over the United States-led peace initiative.

The international community must “intensify sustained pressure” on Israel to meet the Palestinian people’s demands, the coalition said in a joint declaration following a meeting at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) headquarters. They also urged Jakarta to open direct communication with various Palestinian resistance factions to help strengthen their collective goal.

Dozens of ulemas, interfaith religious organizations, philanthropic bodies and academics gathered in Central Jakarta on Tuesday to draft a renewed declaration of support for Palestine amid growing international diplomatic engagement, framing their meeting as a response to recent peace proposals and a call to safeguard a just process toward full Palestinian sovereignty.

Led by MUI chairman for foreign affairs Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim and joined by the Palestine Defense Institute, the two-hour meeting reviewed the course of the Gaza war, shifting international sentiment and peace initiatives.

They concluded with a nine-point joint declaration and voiced support for a youth-led pro-Palestine rally slated for Sunday.

Citing recent developments at the United Nations General Assembly, where a record number of countries came forward to recognize Palestinian statehood, and recalling legal cases filed against Israel at various international courts, Sudarnoto kickstarted Tuesday’s discussion by welcoming Tel Aviv’s growing isolation on the global stage, while also praising the Palestinian people’s continued resistance against occupation.
