P

resident Prabowo Subianto and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung have expressed their hope to continue the two countries’ defense cooperation, including on existing collaboration to develop fighter jets.

The two leaders met on Saturday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju and highlighted how the two countries have built strong bilateral cooperation over the years.

“We have built cooperation in various fields, such as in economics, trade and investment, and also in defense and security as well,” Lee said in his opening remarks at the meeting, according to a press release from Prabowo’s office.

“We have built these cooperation to very high levels, and I hope we'll be able to continue this trend,” he said.

Lee said he hoped that they could build on existing collaboration, such as the joint development of the KF-21 fighter jets.

The KF-21 Boramae program is a joint initiative between Korea Aerospace Industries and Indonesia’s state-owned aerospace manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia that was formalized in 2015, with South Korea covering 60 percent of the development cost and Indonesia contributing around 20 percent of it.

The project continues to be in development after suffering from delays and setbacks, including several renegotiations Indonesia made on its part of the contribution throughout the years.
