A wide range of events unfolded across the globe this year, spanning moments of joy, sorrow and the unexpected.

Armed conflicts were a defining feature.

The Russia-Ukraine war still shows no clear signs of ending, while Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip continues to claim the lives of countless ordinary people. These prolonged conflicts underscore the enduring failure of the international community to halt cycles of violence.

Elsewhere, disasters both natural and due to human activity have left deep scars. In January, the massive Los Angeles wildfires highlighted the United States’ struggle to confront the climate crisis. Just last month, a deadly apartment fire in Hong Kong, still under investigation, killed at least 160 people including several Indonesian nationals.

Global politics also drew intense attention. The high-profile October meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the ongoing great power rivalry. In the US, the November inauguration of Zohran Mamdani as the first Muslim mayor of New York City added a new chapter to the city’s political and cultural history.

Humanitarian crises extended beyond battlefields. In August, migrants attempting to enter Europe in search of better lives lost them instead along dangerous routes.

Meanwhile, millions of people worldwide mourned Pope Francis’ death in April, which marked the end of an era for the Catholic Church.
