View all search resultsndonesia has reaffirmed its support for Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to eradicate online scam operations that have ensnared thousands of foreign workers, including many Indonesians, as part of a broader crackdown on transnational crime.
Ahead of completing his term as Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia, Santo Darmosumarto met with Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Monday at the Solidarity Palace in Phnom Penh, reiterating Indonesia’s backing for Cambodia’s intensified enforcement actions against online fraud networks.
“Transnational crime can only be addressed through intensive cooperation, both bilaterally and regionally,” said Santo, according to an official statement.
Santo’s remarks came amid a sharp increase in Indonesian nationals fleeing scam centers across Cambodia in recent weeks. Many have sought help from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, with up to 2,493 Indonesians recording requests for repatriation as of Tuesday. At least 43 of these have completed document processing and are scheduled to fly home on Jan. 30.
Santo also expressed his gratitude to Hun Sen for the Cambodian government’s support in providing services and protection to Indonesian citizens, including those entangled in the scam industry.

Hun Sen, who was Cambodia’s long-time prime minister until 2023, stated in the meeting that strengthening efforts to eradicate online fraud syndicates in the country began long ago and has only recently yielded positive results.
