he governments of the United Kingdom and Indonesia have launched Multistakeholder Forestry Program (MFP)-Phase 5 in an effort to strengthen sustainable forestry governance and increase global trust in Indonesian forestry products, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said on Tuesday.
“We emphasize the importance of better forest governance, to improve forests’ supporting capacity and carrying capacity,” he said.
“The balance between development and the environment must be maintained, and this program helps in realizing the balance.”
Meanwhile, British Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey stressed the importance of international cooperation in facing climate change and forest protection challenges.
“The future of Indonesian forest is an important issue for the world and needs cooperation between the Indonesian government and society to maintain biodiversity and forest coverage,” he said.
He added that the UK-Indonesia partnership through MFP-Phase 5 provided benefits for reaching climate and biodiversity goals as well as creating economy opportunities.
“This collaboration also opens up economic opportunities, including for small and medium enterprises [SMEs] and businesses from Indonesia and the UK to develop sustainable forestry products,” he said.
