Six top diplomats from Muslim-majority nations, including Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, were set to depart for Moscow on Tuesday as part of a string of diplomatic visits to countries key to the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas.

While fighting raged, negotiators worked to seal a deal for the release of some of the roughly 240 hostages the Islamist militants took during their unprecedented October 7 attacks on Israel.

There was no immediate response from Israel on the status of negotiation efforts to secure the release of the estimated 240 hostages seized during Hamas's horrific assault.

Health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP 200 people were evacuated from the Indonesian hospital in Jabaliya and taken by bus to Nasser hospital in the southern town of Khan Yunis.

Indonesia’s top diplomat issued “the harshest of condemnations” on Israel’s attack on an Indonesian-funded hospital in Gaza, as she jetted off to persuade the UN Security Council to impose a ceasefire.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli military of the reports from the Indonesian Hospital but the Palestinian news agency WAFA said the facility had been hit by artillery fire.

In remarks made during a meeting with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, the monarch said global powers should force Israel to comply with international law to protect civilians and ensure Israel heeds calls to allow uninterrupted flow of aid into the enclave.

Israel's top ally Washington has given its full backing to the country's response to the October 7 shock attack by Hamas, which left 1,200 dead, mostly civilians. About 240 people were taken hostage.

Al-Shifa hospital has become a focal point for Israeli operations in northern Gaza since soldiers raided the complex on Wednesday, hunting for a command center they say militant group Hamas operates there.

As the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia had no plans to withdraw its troops in Lebanon.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke by telephone with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi "to share his deep concern for the Jordanian medical personnel injured outside the Jordanian Field Hospital while providing critical medical care in Gaza," the State Department said.

In the north of the Hamas-ruled Palestinian enclave, Israel said its forces were still present at Gaza's biggest hospital, Al Shifa, but gave no further details of their operations since the previous day when they entered the facility culminating a days-long siege.

"If we pull back, then who will take over? We can't leave a vacuum. We have to think about what will be the mechanism; there are many ideas that are thrown in the air," Herzog said in an interview with the FT.

By early evening, Israeli troops had withdrawn from the facility, the journalist said, redeploying around the hospital.

The Israeli military stormed the Al-Shifa hospital, the largest in Gaza, on Wednesday in what it described as "a precise and targeted operation against Hamas".

"All men 16 years and above, raise your hands," a soldier shouted in Arabic through a loudspeaker, to those sheltering inside Al-Shifa hospital, which has become the centre of fierce urban combat for days.

After days of heavy air strikes around Gaza City's Al-Shifa hospital, witnesses said tanks and armoured vehicles were metres from the gate of the besieged facility, which has become a focal point of the five-week-old war. 

"Indonesia appeals to the US to do more to stop the atrocities in Gaza. Ceasefire is a must for the sake of humanity," Jokowi said in the Oval Office.

In Gaza City, Al-Shifa hospital is caught in Israel's ground offensive aimed at destroying Hamas, and the compound has been repeatedly hit by strikes, one of which Hamas health officials said destroyed the cardiac ward on Sunday.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, gathered Arab and Muslim leaders for the summit as the kingdom has sought to exert its influence to press the United States and Israel for an end to hostilities in Gaza.

The emergency meeting of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) comes after Hamas militants' bloody October 7 attacks that Israeli officials say left about 1,200 people dead, mostly civilians, and 239 taken hostage.

Speaking to the Security Council, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the situation on the ground as desperate.

"A ceasefire with Hamas means surrender," he told Fox News, adding there was no "timetable" for the military offensive.
