Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng on June 13 finalized the agreement, which will see Indonesia supplying up to 3.5 gigawatts of renewable energy to Singapore through 2035. However, in a notable twist, Bahlil announced that state electricity company PLN would not be involved in the deal.

Given that the president-elect has been building a big-tent coalition government, the topmost question is whether he plans to distribute cabinet posts to reward his political allies or appoint technocrats to lead ministries during his rule.

9 months agoAs the House of Representatives ends its term, its special committee is out to conclude an investigation into alleged haj quota misallocation involving the Religious Affairs Ministry. Considering that such misallocation appears to happen almost every year and go unresolved, the House’s all-out efforts to uncover the irregularities this time around may be fraught with political motives.
9 months agoThe government has merged the country’s two state-owned airport operators into one, PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia, in a bid to improve efficiency, and eventually cut logistics costs in the country, while at the same time improving profitability. After the merger the new entity is now called InJourney Airports, part of giant state-owned aviation and tourism holding company PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (InJourney).

9 months agoNine out of 76 candidates in the running to become Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) members for the 2024 – 2029 period are politicians from political parties in the Onward Indonesia Coalition Plus (KIM Plus) supporting president-elect Prabowo Subianto. The final decision on the new BPK members will be made later in September and will be sealed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, whose term will end in less than two months.

During their meeting, Prabowo described Russia as a “great friend” and discussed the possibility of various cooperations.

10 months agoMinisters from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration have brought the topic of the subsidized fuel, Pertalite, back into the spotlight. The plan is to reduce the consumption of the government subsidized fuel beginning August, coinciding with Indonesia’s Independence Day. However, differing statements from high-ranking officials have left the public puzzled, as the government has yet to reach a consensus on curtailing the country’s fuel subsidies.
11 months agoThe House of Representatives will soon begin deliberations on the creation of the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA), replacing the Presidential Advisory Council known as Wantimpres. The legislation is not seeking big changes other than in name and size of the council, from nine members at present, to whatever number the sitting president wants, raising questions about what is the real purpose of it all.
11 months agoVice president-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka has been touring Jakarta amid his busy agenda as mayor of Surakarta, Central Java, stopping by Central Jakarta’s Tanah Tinggi subdistrict and Nangka Market as well as South Jakarta’s Manggis Market on July 3, accompanied by popular celebrity and TV host Raffi Ahmad. Earlier on June 28, he strolled along the Semanggi River in Tegal Alur, West Jakarta, alongside acting Jakarta governor Heru Budi Hartono.

Central Java has always been a PDI-P stronghold.
11 months agoIndonesia’s antitrust agency, the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), has accused e-commerce firm Shopee and tech giant Google of engaging in monopoly practices. Shopee, accused of monopolizing its courier services, has since closed its case by agreeing to make changes to its services. On the other hand, Google, accused of monopoly through its Google Play Billing (GPB) System, has only just entered its phase of court hearings.
