ore than 1,500 people participated in the Sun Life Resolution Run 2019 on Sunday, a race organized by life insurance, wealth and asset management company Sun Life Financial Indonesia to help more people start living an active and healthy lifestyle as their first move to prevent diabetes.
The Sun Life Resolution Run, which was held in Indonesia for the first time, took place at the Indonesia Convention Center (ICE), in BSD City, Tangerang, Banten. The runners could choose a 5K race, a 10K race, or the 1.5K family run.
The Jakarta Resolution Run was part of an Asia-wide initiative involving 10,000 runners across five countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Hong Kong, China – throughout the month of January.
“It’s called Resolution Run because it’s January—it’s a New Year resolution. And we want to help people to start the year well,” said Sun Life Financial Asia President Claude Accum.
The Resolution Run is part of Sun Life’s commitment to helping people across the globe to enjoy a healthy life with regular exercise and a balanced diet in an effort to prevent the spread of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes.
According to the 2018 Global Burden of Disease Study, rates of obesity have risen in almost every country in the world, leading to more than a million deaths from type 2 diabetes and half a million deaths from diabetes-related chronic diseases in 2017.
South Asia is expected to see a growing number of people living with type 2 diabetes, an increase of almost 150 percent from 2000 to 2035, according to the American Diabetes Association Journal. An estimated 7 percent of people in Indonesia have diabetes, the World Health Organization reported, and the disease is responsible for 6 percent of deaths each year.
Sun Life, furthermore, is donating C$250,000 (over Rp 2.6 billion) to diabetes charities across Asia, including more than Rp 600 million in Indonesia. All registration fees from the Jakarta Resolution Run, totaling Rp 192 million, will go toward providing walking aid equipment for diabetic patients at the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta and Rp 425 million will go to the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Medicine.
This is all part of Sun Life’s ongoing contribution to diabetes awareness, prevention and care. In 2015, Sun Life built the Diabetes Education Clinic at the RSCM hospital and the company has been raising funds to support the walking aid initiative for several years.
In addition, Sun Life also shares health insights and tools to help people live a healthy life and offers motivation and rewards to keep them going. In Malaysia, the SunActiv app offers rewards based on the number of steps you take each month and the latest health news and insights. The app also allows the users to search and book appointments with healthcare providers and shop for wellness products. Furthermore, in the Philippines, Sun Life’s Foundation is creating a Linear Park in Marikina City—a safe space for people to get fit which will benefit 19,000 households in the area.
