tate-owned Bank Mandiri has reaffirmed its commitment to Indonesian sports with the sealing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the upcoming continental basketball championship FIBA Asia Cup 2021.
The MoU was signed by Bank Mandiri Institutional President Director Darmawan Junaidi and PP PERBASI Chairman Danny Kosasih on Wednesday at CGV FX Senayan, with State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir looking on.
Under the MoU, Bank Mandiri will provide the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) with the financial support needed to train the national team for the first international sports competition hosted by Indonesia during the pandemic, taking place from Aug. 16 to 28. Bank Mandiri will also assist in funding to prepare for the necessary infrastructure, particularly parts of the venue to comply with health protocol standards.
Darmawan said in a statement that he hoped the support would be able to help the national team improve its winning record. It won its highest ever of fourth place at the 1967 Asia Cup in South Korea.
“Acting as the host, we believe that the Indonesian national team has a significant chance to obtain the best results in the event, as the players’ skills have been honed in tough club-level competitions. We hope that the support can provide moral support for the players of Team Garuda,” he said.
Darmawan also noted that the support is also part of Bank Mandiri’s vision as a state-owned enterprise to take part in accelerating Indonesia’s international sports achievements.
“One form of this support is through the release of special edition national basketball team-themed Mandiri e-money cards, which are available at a number of e-commerce platforms. Through the initiative, we hope to reintroduce the Indonesian national basketball team to the public, so that they can still support the team even though they cannot see them live,” he said, adding that he also wishes to provide an example as the best host country.
At the same event, Bank Mandiri also pledged support to Phase 2 of the Indonesian Basketball League, which will run from May 23 to June 6 in Jakarta.
Previously, IBL Phase 1 took place in Bogor on April 10, with 12 professional teams entering series 1 to 4. The first phase is considered an example for holding sporting events under strict health protocols while simultaneously providing entertainment for the public.
“Following the success of IBL Phase 1, we hope that this support can maintain the quality of IBL in its second phase, as well as training the best clubs and players that will bring glory for Indonesia,” Darmawan said.
Like with the national team, Bank Mandiri also released special editions of its Mandiri e-money card featuring the 12 clubs participating in IBL 2021. The clubs will also symbolically receive the special edition e-money cards in a ceremony.
“And as a form of support to the national basketball scene, we are committed to providing Perbasi with support in renovating basketball courts in several areas of Greater Jakarta to increase basketball lovers’ enthusiasm and spirit.”
