P

resident Prabowo Subianto, returning from his trip to the Middle East, visited Bali on Saturday to  meet people affected by the deadly floods that struck the island last week.

Arriving in Bali on Saturday morning, Prabowo inspected residential areas in Denpasar, the provincial capital and one of the hardest-hit regions by the floods last Wednesday, which were triggered by days of torrential rain.

The President walked through alleys in Gerenceng area that were still covered in mud and spoke with locals who recounted how nearby Badung River overflowed rapidly into their homes.

“We will help you out with everything,” Prabowo said to one of the residents whose house was damaged by the flood, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel.

He also said aid was being distributed and flood relief measures were underway, according to a press release from Prabowo’s office. The government, Prabowo said, would also prioritize longer-term efforts to improve disaster preparedness and avoid more deadly floods in Bali.

The torrential rains on Tuesday and Wednesday triggered floods and landslides in Denpasar and six of Bali’s eight regencies, including Gianyar, Tabanan and Badung, that killed 17 people, prompting the province to declare a week-long state of emergency.
