T Asuransi Sinar Mas has announced the launch of SIMAS COVID-19, an insurance that provides special protection for treatment costs related to coronavirus, calling the protection a “necessity.”

Dumasi M M Samosir, director of PT Asuransi Sinar Mas, stated, “Hospital data proves that treating COVID-19 patients costs a lot. Insurance can protect consumers from financial risks due to the high maintenance costs.”

In Indonesia, the cost of PCR tests, treatment in hospital and medication can reach millions of rupiah, and cannot be covered with health insurance provided by the state. The Indonesian government has been trying to curb the cost of PCR and antigen tests across the country.

SIMAS COVID-19 will not only reimburse hospital costs, but will also guarantee additional medical costs if the insured undergoes selfisolation. Dumasi added that the insured can immediately contact Asuransi Sinar Mas to get a doctor’s consultation via phone call, and pick up the drugs necessary from a number of pharmacies in collaboration with the insurance company.

“We are working with the Simas Sehat Pharmacy and Clinic to provide an isoman package, which can be claimed by the insured with a cashless system,” Dumasi said. Furthermore, the Simas Sehat Pharmacy and Clinic guarantee the availability of drugs at reasonable prices

As more countries are easing their borders to Indonesian citizens, it is important to note that SIMAS COVID-19 protection applies worldwide, therefore can be used to complete visa requirements for foreign travel, as required by most countries.

“We hope that SIMAS COVID-19 can help meet the needs of people who want to travel abroad in fulfi lling the visit visa requirements,” added Dumasi.

The insurance initiative was launched on Oct. 15 via a virtual event on Zoom, hosted by Becky Tumewu with 990 people watching through Zoom. Others tuned in through the Asuransi Sinar Mas Offi cial Youtube channel and Instagram. A talk entitled “Living Side by

Side with COVID-19” (Hidup Berdampingan dengan COVID-19) was the main event, with topics presented by Saleh Husin and Dr. Vito A Damay, Sp.JP., M.Kes., FIHA., FICA, FAsCC.

Saleh, Sinar Mas managing director, drew from his own experience with COVID-19 to reiterate that anyone can get infected. He admitted that while he prioritized health protocols in daily life and had been living a healthy lifestyle for a long time, he still managed to contract the virus.

Saleh also reiterated the importance of vaccinations and health protocols to prevent infection, saying, “Whoever and whatever the situation, don’t ignore your health care program, complete vaccinations and protect yourself with insurance that provides an integrated services such as SIMAS COVID-19.” The point was also echoed by Dr. Vito, adding that the virus would still exist in the future and further explaining the importance of wearing masks in public.

Dr. Vito also explained that most patients treated had more than one pre-existing health condition, making them more vulnerable to the virus. “If comorbidities are controlled, they can reduce the risk of the severity of COVID-19,” he said. The doctor again urged participants to get vaccinated, so that when they are infected, it will reduce the risk of having severe symptoms that require hospitalization.

The coverage and cost of SIMAS COVID-19 is varied and available in both rupiah and US dollars, and is available for purchase on the Asuransi Sinar Mas website, mobile application or StarPoin mobile application. It can also be purchased in the form of a voucher to give as a gift or donation. Asuransi Sinar Mas also promises a relatively short waiting period and affordable prices as low as Rp 250,000 (excluding discounts for family or group policies).

While most health insurance sets the age limit to 60 years old, SIMAS COVID-19's eligibility is available for those that are 80 years old or under. This is incredibly essential for the older group of people who are usually overlooked because their age exceeds 60, and therefore does not have health coverage.

As of September, there were more than 4.2 million Indonesians who have been tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, with over 30,000 active cases. The government is asking Indonesians to continue getting vaccinated and to obey health protocols put in place to stop the spread and achieve herd immunity.
