Indonesia talks post-pandemic women empowerment at G20 ministerial conference

"We believe that only via global cooperation and a strong commitment to promoting gender equality cann we overcome the challenges women face, particularly in the COVID-19 recovery time," emphasized Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister I Gustu Ayu Bintang Darmawati.

Indonesia held the Group of Twenty (G20) Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment in Bali on Aug. 24-26. The meeting was attended by G20 ministers of women’s empowerment; the director for development, economic, and environmental affairs of the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia; representatives from Women 20 and G20 EMPOWER; invited countries; as well as various international organizations and businesses.

The G20 Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment highlighted the importance of formulating and strengthening countries’ commitment to future steps, as well as developing concrete actions to close gender gaps and support women’s empowerment globally, particularly in a post-COVID-19 global economy. The meeting also served as a platform to exchange information, best practices and lessons learned in the area of gender and women’s empowerment.

Indonesia promoted three priorities related to gender and women’s empowerment issues: (1) care economy post COVID-19: the missing opportunity in the labor market; (2) closing digital gender gap: women’s participation in the digital economy and future work; and (3) women’s entrepreneurship: accelerating equality, accelerating recovery. Indonesia also had the opportunity to share its stories about women’s empowerment in Special Event: Indonesia’s Experiences in Women’s Empowerment, which discussed Indonesia’s best practices in supporting women’s empowerment from the perspective of the private sector.

This is the second time the Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment was held under the G20 framework. The first ministerial meeting was convened during the Italian Presidency in 2021. This year, a series of meetings under the Indonesian Presidency began on Dec. 1, 2021 and will culminate at the Bali Summit, to be held on Nov. 15-16.
