“G20 members carry global burdens and responsibilities and collective work, which will impact how the world moves. As a new person in this forum, I need everyone's cooperation,” said Communication and Information Technology Minister Johnny G. Plate, who recently hosted digital ministers from Group of 20 members to anticipate the impact of digitalization.
The G20 Digital Ministerial Meeting for the Digital Economy was held in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sept. 1. The meeting was attended by digital ministers from G20 members, invited countries, international organizations, academia and the private sector. The Indonesian delegation included representatives from the Foreign Ministry.
The G20 Digital Ministerial Meeting for the Digital Economy, which discussed the issue of digitalization and its cross-sectoral impact on the world, had the aim of reaching consensus on the digitalization ecosystem in the economy. This meeting was also a platform for exchanging information and experiences related to best practices in the field of digitalization and its challenges.
Through this meeting, Indonesia pushed for three priorities in the field of the digital economy, namely: (1) connectivity after the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) digital literacy and skills; and (3) a free and secure cross-border flow of data.
The G20 Ministerial Meeting for the Digital Economy reached an agreement to complete the Bali Package communique at the G20 Summit in November.
The Ministerial Meeting, under the Indonesian presidency, was the sixth such meeting within the framework of the G20. The first meeting was initiated by the Chinese presidency in 2016 and was later developed during the German presidency. This Ministerial Meeting is part of a series of activities during Indonesia's 2022 G20 presidency. The Indonesian G20 presidency has the theme "Recover Together, Recover Stronger" and has three priority issues, namely: global health architecture, digital transformation and energy transition as its main focus.
The series of activities of the Indonesian G20 presidency will culminate in the G20 Summit, which will be held in Bali on Nov. 15-16. The summit will be attended by leaders of the G20 members, who will discuss and convey their commitment to efforts to ensure the world economic recovery. Indonesia’s term as G20 president is from December 2021 to Nov. 30 this year, whereupon the position will handed over to India. Indonesia itself will remain a member of the Troika until the end of the Indian presidency.
