Pertamina introduces solar power plant to Kedonganan traditional village

P

ertamina through PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Jatimbalinus DPPU Ngurah Rai, empowers the community of Kedonganan traditional village in Bali through the utilization of solar power plants (SPP) to support a more effective waste-management system.

As part of the Village Energy Independence (DEB) program, this social and environmental responsibility (TJSL) program strengthens the company's commitment to empowering communities to accelerate the equitable transition to renewable energy, utilizing local energy resources.

DPPU Ngurah Rai operation head Dicky Abdul Hakim said this renewable energy supports the operational electricity needs of the reduce, reuse and recycle waste-disposal facility in Kedonganan Ngardi Resik (TPS3R KNR). “With its expansive land and proximity to the coastal area, we see that the community can harness solar renewable energy to support the activities of TPS3R KNR. We hope that with the presence of this renewable energy, the community can also directly experience its benefits, thus enabling us to achieve the transition to renewable energy quickly,” says Dicky.

As additional information, the KNR is the first waste-disposal facility to implement a bar code-based application for assessing the separation of organic and inorganic waste. In the future, the collected organic waste will be transformed into biochar briquettes and trichoderma compost. Meanwhile, the collected inorganic waste undergoes compression and is subsequently sold to third parties.

With a capacity of 6,54-watt peak (Wp) and 10 watt hour (Wh) per year, this SPP not only reduces emissions by up to 8,502 kgCO2eq but also saves electricity costs of up to Rp 15 million per year. This is one of the steps in accelerating a widespread transition to renewable energy by optimizing local energy resources.

“This has provided numerous benefits to the community of Kedonganan village, one of which is increased productivity in waste management at the TPS3R. Furthermore, these benefits are felt in supporting our local economy to progress even further,” said Kedonganan village resident Supardi Asmorobangun.

Since 2019, the DEB program has yielded benefits such as 170,880 wp of SPP energy, 605,000 m3/year of biogas and methane energy, and 8,000 watts of microhydro energy, 6,500 liters of biodiesel energy per year, along with 16,500 wp of hybrid solar and wind power plant energy, leading to a carbon-emissions reduction of 565,928 tonnes of CO2eq per year.

Furthermore, the DEB program plays a role in meeting the energy needs of the community and has an economic impact on 3,021 households, with a total multiplier effect of Rp 1.8 billion in benefits per year. The hope is that through the Pertamina Self-Reliant Energy Village program, the community can develop its economic potential through various training programs aimed at enhancing the capacity of the people and the development of MSME products. This includes providing education on the utilization and maintenance of renewable energy facilities.

PT Pertamina Niaga Regional Jatimbalinus relations and CSR area manager Comm. Ahad Rahedi explained that Pertamina's DEB program is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 7 (clean and affordable energy), 8 (decent work and economic growth) and 13 (climate action). "Furthermore, through this program, Pertamina also contributes to the government's target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060," Ahad concludes.
