ertamina University Advisory Board chair Nicke Widyawati, who is also Pertamina president director and CEO, has warned that the energy transition and decarbonization program for the sustainability of the earth faces three main challenges: funding, technology and human resources.

“Technology can collaborate with others. When there are resources and a market, then funding can be obtained. However, human resources are irreplaceable; it must be Indonesian human resources that we develop. This is where Pertamina University must play a role,” Nicke said in the inaugural Advisory Board meeting.

According to the LinkedIn Global Skills 2023 report, the global demand for green skills has reached 40 percent, yet only 13 percent of the world's workforce possess the sought-after green skills. Despite a 12 percent increase in the size of the sustainability workforce in 2023, it is evident that this has been insufficient to meet the annual 22.7 percent increase in sustainability job demand.

Meanwhile, Prof. Ir. Tutuka Ariadji M.Sc., Ph.D., a member of the Advisory Board and also oil and gas director general at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, welcomed the plan for the establishment of a vocational campus at Pertamina University in the new capital Nusantara. “Establishing a multi-campus in Nusantara will leverage the strength of the Pertamina group network. Pertamina University must optimize the downstream oil and gas processes to become the university's comparative advantage,” said Tutuka.

The inaugural meeting of the Advisory Board, held on Oct. 25, was attended by Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoko Santoso M.Sc., PGDip.Diab.,IPU., Dr. Ir. Widhyawan Prawiraatmadja, Prof. Dr. Rer. Nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc, Prof. Dr, Ir. Mochamad Ashari, M.Eng, IPU, AEng., and Dr. Ir. Mulyono, M.T., M.T.

Djoko said energy-focused education would remain pertinent in the future, despite the world moving toward sustainable energy. “Economic developments will lead to increased energy usage, consequently raising per capita emissions. Pertamina University plays a role in educating individuals capable of supporting the energy transition and decarbonization. This way, together, we aim for net-zero emissions [NZE],” said Djoko.

During the same event, Nicke and the Advisory Board engaged with the students. Yuliana Meranti Bofra, a Sobat Bumi scholarship recipient from the indigenous community in Papua, said the opportunity to continue her education at Pertamina University was her pathway to developing her region, Tambrauw district in Papua, renowned for its conservation efforts.

In addition to ensuring inclusive and equitable education quality, Pertamina University continuously strives for quality education by developing a curriculum based on learning outcomes and several programs that enhance graduates' capacity to address sustainability issues.

“Through the implementation of a sustainable development curriculum, students actively engage in collaborative research with industries and community service. They are also prepared to become competitive graduates through the Red and White Graduates program, which equips students to leverage career opportunities within the Pertamina group via training and mentoring by industry practitioners,” stated Prof. Dr. Ir. Wawan Gunawan A. Kadir, MS, the rector of Pertamina University.

Similarly, Pertamina's vice president of corporate communications, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that sustainability skills played a crucial role in supporting Indonesia's government vision of achieving NZE by 2050. “Aligned with this focus on sustainability, Pertamina, through Pertamina University, encourages students to master sustainable practices, enabling them to contribute towards achieving NZE,” said Fadjar.

For now, the campus established by Pertamina provides entry paths through various categories such as Written Test Path, Report Card Value Test Path and Selection Based on SNBT Values. For more information, visit the website at pmb.universitaspertamina.ac.id/.

As a leading company in the energy transition field, Pertamina is committed to supporting the NZE 2060 target by continually promoting programs directly impacting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these efforts align with the implementation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies across all business lines and operations within Pertamina.
