JIS promotes empathy, inclusion through LEAD Week’s creative activities

J

akarta Intercultural School (JIS) dedicates a week each year to Leadership, Exploration, Adventure and Discovery (LEAD), an experiential learning program that emphasizes student growth beyond the classroom. The initiative encourages meaningful engagement with local communities and this year, one group of students collaborated with POTADS Rumah Ceria, a center that supports children with Down syndrome.

Over four days, JIS students led a series of art workshops designed to promote creativity and connection. Held at both POTADS and JIS, the workshops used painting and collaborative projects to bridge differences and foster understanding. Through shared moments of laughter, storytelling and art making, participants experienced the impacts of inclusive interaction firsthand.

LEAD Week reflects JIS’s commitment to nurturing global citizens who are not only academically capable, but also socially conscious. By creating structured, real-world opportunities for service and leadership, the school helps students develop empathy, confidence and collaborative skills.

Hosting children from POTADS at JIS offered an opportunity to break barriers and spark joy in a new environment. Meanwhile, visiting the POTADS center allowed JIS students to engage more deeply with the community, strengthening mutual respect and appreciation.

This approach to education, grounded in experience and reflection, remains a hallmark of the JIS philosophy. Programs like LEAD Week show how creativity and compassion can build lasting and meaningful connections for both JIS students and the communities they serve.

Through these efforts, JIS reaffirms its role as an institution that not only educates, but also inspires positive change.
