Kezia Fellcia Kurniawan, research, action toward achieving green energy in Indonesia

K

ezia Fellcia Kurniawan, an 11th-grade student at Jakarta Intercultural School, has taken significant steps in addressing energy and environmental challenges in Indonesia through her participation in biogasoline research. This innovative study has gained attention as a means to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy, showcasing the significant contributions young researchers can make in driving positive environmental change.

Kezia’s journey in research began when she was accepted by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to participate in biofuel-related research. Under the guidance of Robert Ronal Widjaya, Kezia was tasked with exploring unconventional methods for converting ethanol into gasoline.

Her research focused on the use of aluminum-pillared bentonite (Al-PILC) as a catalyst, which has proven to significantly improve conversion efficiency. According to her initial findings, gasoline selectivity increased drastically, from 0.91 percent with unmodified bentonite to 51.70 percent using Al-PILC. These results open significant opportunities for producing more environmentally friendly and sustainable biofuels.

"Al-PILC demonstrates exceptional performance in enhancing ethanol-to-gasoline conversion efficiency," Robert explained. This reinforces the catalyst’s role as a potential solution to meet future energy demands in a greener and more sustainable way.

Recognizing the potential of these findings, Kezia extended her efforts beyond the laboratory. She launched a project titled BioFueline, consisting of a public campaign and survey, to raise public awareness on biogasoline as well as spreadi information about the fuel and its benefits. During a presentation, Kezia stated, “Research only makes an impact if it reaches people who can utilize it,” integrating interactive discussions and banners to educate the public about the importance of renewable fuels.

.

In addition to her campaign, Kezia designed a public survey to measure awareness and interest in biogasoline. The survey, involving 200 respondents, revealed that while most people were unfamiliar with the term “biogasoline,” 67 percent expressed a strong willingness to switch to cleaner, more sustainable energy options. This data highlights the importance of continuous public education and advocacy to shift energy-use paradigms in Indonesia.

Kezia’s biogasoline research not only impacts academia but also contributes to reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Her initiative aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to tackling climate change. Additionally, the biogasoline production process, which utilizes organic waste, addresses waste management issues, providing a dual-purpose solution for environmental challenges.

Reflecting on her experience, Kezia shared that the journey of research and advocacy has been a transformative experience, deepening her understanding of environmental science. She is determined to continue exploring real-world solutions through research and innovation, with the hope of inspiring other young people to join the movement toward a greener and more sustainable future.
