The Jokowi administration is gearing up to finish the Trans Sumatra Toll Road mega development project ahead of the 2024 general election.
tate-owned construction firm PT Hutama Karya is slated to finish building the Binjai-Langsa toll road connecting Binjai in North Sumatra to Langsa in Aceh province by 2024 to improve logistics in western Indonesia.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated on Feb. 4 the first of five sections of the 131-kilometer Binjai-Langsa toll road. The President said the 11.8 km Binjai-Stabat toll road section was expected to cut logistics costs by 75 percent and help improve the competitiveness of local products.
A breakdown of the project time frame shows that the remaining four toll road sections are slated for completion over the next two years: the 26.7 km Stabat-Tanjung Pura section and the 9 km Tanjung Pura-Pangkalan Brandan section by February 2023, and the 44.2 km Pangkalan Brandan-Kuala Simpang section and Kuala Simpang-Langsa section in February 2024.
The Binjai-Langsa toll road project has a total investment cost of Rp 23.4 trillion (US$1.62 billion), of which Rp 16.7 trillion is allocated for construction.
"I believe this good infrastructure will be used [optimally] to encourage new business, increase jobs and improve the people's welfare," said Jokowi.
Hutama Karya corporate secretary Tjahjo Purnomo said on Feb. 5 that the government had issued a certificate of operability (SLO) for the initial Binjai-Stabat section on Jan. 28.
“We are currently waiting for a green light from regulators to begin operations so the toll road can be used by local residents,” he added.
