S

tate-owned enterprise PT Telkom Indonesia (Telkom), is striving to assist equality and improve the quality of today’s digitalization, especially amid the acceleration of the new era prompted by the pandemic.

According to Telkom, Indonesia’s determination should be based on creating digital sovereignty in the country. In order to achieve this, three domains will need to be established, focusing on the environment, society and the digital economy.

The latter domain can be fulfilled by improving infrastructure to ensure equal telecommunication networks. Based on Finance Ministry data, the state budget investment for digital infrastructure development from 2019 to 2022 is Rp 75 trillion (US$4.99 billion).

However, the government is not the only stakeholder trying to achieve this dream.  Until December 2022, Telkom is helping provide various infrastructure projects such as 170,885 kilometers of fiber-optic cable that stretches across the archipelago, 251,116 base transceiver stations (BTS) and 14.1 million optical ports that help 8.6 million IndiHome subscribers connect with the world through internet connection.

There is a parallel between the country’s digital sovereignty and the condition of communities in Indonesia. Digital inclusivity and literacy must be improved in order to improve the quality of digitalization. According to data from the Communications and Information Ministry, Indonesia's digital literacy index is 3.49 out of a range of 0 to 5. This indicates that the digital literacy level of the community is maturing and is ready to become a strong source of capital to compete in the era of Society 5.0. This era is based on the convergence of cyberspace and reality.

Telkom is helping form a strong digital society through its various products and services, and its collaboration with several state-owned companies. Through collaboration, the company aims to improve digital literacy through apps such as PeduliLindungi, along with the implementation of assistance through companies, providing Amoeba and Indigo facilities and various other efforts.

A strong economic digital ecosystem is based almost solely on the environment and the people behind it, and Indonesia has great potential. Through digitalization, quality of life can increase and this will have a positive impact on Indonesia's economic growth. According to reports from Google, Temasek and Bain & Company, the value of digital transactions in the Indonesian e-commerce sector reached Rp 1,000 trillion (US$70 billion) in 2021. This figure is predicted to continue to increase to US$146 billion by 2025.

As an Indonesian company, Telkom is offering solutions such as PaDi UMKM for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Agree for the agriculture and fisheries sector, Logee for logistics, BigBox (One Data Indonesia), MySooltan and many other digital services.

"We present a variety of digital products and services, digital platforms and digital connectivity in order to realize Telkom's vision to become the digital telecommunication company of choice for the community. Relying on collaboration with various parties, Telkom wants to create an Indonesia that is more prosperous, competitive and provides the best added value for society and the country. Telkom's existence for 57 years will continue to create a better Indonesia through digitalization," said Telkom Indonesia president director Ririek Adriansyah.

In order to help companies to realize this vision, Telkom has initiated three missions. Firstly, Telkom wants to accelerate the development of smart digital infrastructure and platforms that are sustainable, economic and accessible to all. Secondly, developing digital talent to encourage people's ability and level of digital adoption is deemed essential and finally, to lead the formation of a digital ecosystem that provides the best experience for users.

“Indonesia's future will depend on how well the country is able to optimize its wealth and potential in the digital realm. With the best talent, qualified technology and a strong business ecosystem, Indonesia could become a major economic player in the region and even the world in the next few years. Telkom will stand with the people and the Indonesian government to realize these ideals," said Ririek.

This year, Telkom launched its 57th anniversary with the theme of Digital Bisa Untuk Semua (digital can be for everyone). This shows that the company champions inclusivity and highlights its mission to help accelerate the nation's young generation to achieve their dreams through digitalization in various fields. Telkom invites Indonesian young generation to create their own innovations, because all the best ideas start with a dream before they become a reality.
