ndonesia’s start-up ecosystem has caught the eye of potential Israeli investors, even though the two nations do not have official diplomatic relations.

In July of this year, a delegation of Israeli investors, tech professionals and trade officials reportedly visited Jakarta, seeking potential ventures with local start-ups.

The trip, which took place from July 17 to 22, was organized by the Israel-Asia Center, and the delegation traveled under non-Israeli passports because of the absence of official diplomatic ties with Indonesia.

“Despite the lack of diplomatic relations, there is still tremendous untapped potential in education, fintech, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, mobility, health care, agritech and water technology,” said the center’s founder and executive director Rebeecca Zeffert, as reported by The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

Some 100 Israelis and Indonesians met during the trip, including business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors and university presidents. The delegation also reportedly visited start-up hubs and historical sites in Jakarta, as well as an unnamed slum area, and finished with an online discussion.

The organization, however, did not specify which start-ups the businesspeople had met with.

“The online program is an opportunity for participants from both sides to dip their toes in the water. […] When you take all of this into account, it’s not surprising that Indonesia’s digital economy is experiencing massive growth, particularly post-COVID-19,” Zeffert said.
