AirAsia aims to have 50 Airbus 321 in freight services five years from now
Capital A has announced plans to enlarge Teleport, the logistics venture of AirAsia Digital, by adding three Airbus 321 freighters to its fleet in the first quarter of 2023, and 50 within five years.

apital A has announced plans to enlarge Teleport, the logistics venture of AirAsia Digital, by adding three Airbus 321 freighters to its fleet in the first quarter of 2023.
During a celebration of the resumption of AirAsia’s operations at Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 4 on Sept. 15, Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes said Teleport would operate 50 Airbus 321 freighters within five years.
“So, we have taken Airbus 321 freighters, and the first one [will] come in December [2022]. That’s a new beginning for us to have freighters. In five years’ time, I think, we will have at least 50 freighters,” said Fernandes.
“Cargo was always a stepchild for AirAsia,” the CEO said, adding however that the fast growth of e-commerce had created huge cargo demand, prompting him to expand the business into the freight segment.
“There’s a real opportunity here that what we did for passengers, we can do for cargo. Obviously, I think e-commerce could grow tremendously, and so we’re really focused on fulfilling faster e-commerce delivery,” he said.
Recently, Capital A released a so-called superapp for AirAsia as a platform for the company to provide services ranging from an online travel agency to overland transportation, food delivery and payment and transaction processing.
“With AirAsia, it’s not just planes. We have the last mile and first mile, so we can deliver. When you order something online, you want it fast, right?” Fernandes said, adding: “We think we can be faster and cheaper.”
