irport operators are expressing optimism about the recovery of air transportation as they project a double-digit increase in the number of passengers served this year, both for domestic and international flights.

State-owned PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II), which manages airports in the western part of the country, has a target of 73 million passengers in 2023, which would amount to a 17.74-percent increase compared to last year’s figure.

According to Muhammad Awaluddin, president director at AP II, the recovery of demand on domestic routes is well underway since last year.

However, the firm would like to activate more international routes and increase flight frequency for connections with foreign destinations this year.

"International routes would grow mostly at Soekarno-Hatta [International Airport] in Banten and Kualanamu [International Airport] in Medan, [North Sumatra]. Both airports also have good domestic-route connectivity, so foreign tourists [who arrived at those airports] could continue their trip to other travel destinations in the country," Muhammad said in a statement on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Angkasa Pura I (AP I), the other major state-owned airport operator, which manages airports in the central and eastern parts of Indonesia, aims to attract 68 million passengers this year. That would represent a 31-percent growth over last year's figure of around 52.3 million.

"The target can be achieved only through hard work, service improvement and synergy among stakeholders," said Faik Fahmi, president director at AP I, in January.
