enewable energy investment in Indonesia amounted to US$527 million in the first half of 2023, which is just 29.4 percent of the full-year target of $1.79 billion, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

The $527 million figure includes $214 million for geothermal energy, $82 million for bioenergy, $223 million for various other new and renewable energy (NRE) projects, as well as $8 million for energy conservation.

The installed renewable energy power capacity stood at 12.73 gigawatts in mid-2023, 15 percent of the national energy capacity of 84.8 GW, according to the energy ministry's director general in charge of renewables, Dadan Kusdiana.

“The energy ministry is working to make Indonesia’s great renewable energy potential a reliable energy source in the future,” he said in a statement issued on Saturday.

He went on to say that NRE project development needed to consider technical and economic aspects, adding that the location of energy sources across the Indonesian archipelago remained a challenge for developing clean power.

“Comparing the installed capacity with the renewables potential would be imprecise in reflecting the progress of renewable energy industry development in Indonesia, because we have tremendous potential,” Dadan said in the statement.
