ocial media giant TikTok launched its new subscription-only music streaming service "TikTok Music" in Indonesia, home to its largest user base in Southeast Asia.
TikTok Music is differs slightly from Spotify and YouTube, which both allow free access with advertisements.
The new streaming platform will soon be introduced to Australia, Mexico and Singapore.
According to TechCrunch, ByteDance, which owns TikTok, discontinued its previous streaming service, Resso on Sept. 5 in favor of TikTok Music.
By linking the app to their TikTok accounts, users can stream music, download tracks and learn about up-and-coming artists, which TikTok claims will financially benefit the artists.
“Our commitment is simple yet profound. We want to appreciate creativity and equip local music creators with the best tools to find a community, develop careers and create various opportunities in the real world," Tricia Dizon, head of TikTok SEA said on Tuesday in a press briefing.
TikTok launched the service despite calls from local officials to bar the platform from expanding beyond social media over concerns that it would lead to a monopoly in the country.
