T

he Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry says the government plans to declare its commitment to establishing the Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organization (NEPIO) at a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) next week.

According to Renewable Energy Director General Eniya Listiani Dewi, the nuclear energy body will supervise and accelerate development of nuclear power as a national energy source. NEPIO is to be headed by the president, while the energy minister is responsible for its day-to-day operations.

“Next week, we will [announce] the commitment, at the IAEA in Vienna, that we will form NEPIO,” Eniya told reporters on Monday in Jakarta, adding that that 250 megawatts of nuclear power would enter the national grid in 2032 under the National Electricity Master Plan (RUKN).

NEPIO is separate from the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN), which is largely limited to a research and supervisory role in the development of nuclear power.

The ministry’s secretary-general Dadan Kusdiana said previously that Indonesia had met 14 out of 16 international requirements to operate a nuclear power plant, and that the two remaining requisites were to establish NEPIO and to issue a regulatory declaration.

“The government must declare ‘go nuclear’ [through] a Presidential Regulation or [other regulation] later,” Dadan said on June 16, as quoted by Bisnis.com, and that both requirements were “still under discussion”.
