he government is making the final preparations for the formation of the Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organization (NEPIO) in a bid to accelerate the development of nuclear power plants in Indonesia.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and the National Energy Council (DEN) have nominated Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan to chair the new agency.
The ministry was still waiting for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s approval for the structure of the nuclear agency and its leadership as of Jan. 18.
“DEN has sent a letter to the President and the VP asking for direction in forming NEPIO and in nuclear power development,” DEN secretary-general Djoko Siswanto said on Wednesday during the energy ministry’s annual review.
The creation of NEPIO is mandated by a 2021 energy ministry decree to meet the requirements set by the United Nations nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for developing nuclear power plants in the country.
Of the 19 requirements recommended by the IAEA, we have met 16 of them, Djoko said. “There are only three [requirements] left, one of which is the [formation] of NEPIO, and then [on] stakeholders and government policies.”
