usiness leaders have called for a speedy resolution to a leadership rift at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (Kadin), the country’s biggest lobby group, saying that prolonged discord could make the organization less effective in coordinating with the government on key economic policies.
Kadin is currently split into two, after one faction held a disputed extraordinary congress in Jakarta on Saturday to appoint Anindya Bakrie the organization’s chair. Incumbent chair Arsjad Rasjid and his supporters say the congress was illegitimate and that he remains the rightful chair of the organization.
Anindya is the son of senior Golkar Party politician and business mogul Aburizal Bakrie, while Arsjad is president director of publicly listed diversified energy company Indika Energy.
Arsjad still has two years left in his official term as Kadin chair. He was appointed in 2021 with the backing of the administration of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
“I’m hoping for a quick and amicable solution. We need the business community to move forward in concert with the government to support the economy,” Budihardjo Iduansjah, chairman of the Indonesia Retail and Tenant Association (Hippindo), told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
“We’re just waiting to see who will be our point of coordination. We’ll support whoever is backed by the government because, after all, Kadin is the government’s partner,” Budihardjo added.
