Govt, Apple to talk $1b investment next week

The Industry Ministry is set to meet with an Apple executive on Jan. 7-8 to hash out a new deal so the US tech giant can sell the iPhone 16 to Indonesian consumers by complying with local content rules, with a possibility for the investment ministry to take the lead if it opts to set up a local production factory instead.

T

he government is set to meet next week with representatives from Apple Inc. to break a monthslong impasse over local content rules, with officials expecting the talks to culminate in a potential announcement of the United States tech giant investing US$1 billion in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

The meeting on Jan. 7-8 is slated to see Apple’s global policy vice president Nick Amman coming to Jakarta for direct discussions in a bid to persuade the government to lift Indonesia’s sales ban on the latest model of its flagship iPhone.

Alhamdullilah [Praise be to God], Apple is sending a high-level [representative] from the US to negotiate directly with us,” Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita told reporters on Thursday.

The ministry had been in discussions with Apple for several months about its planned investment in the country, but was yet to receive an updated formal proposal from the company's California headquarters, Agus added.

“Apple’s plans have been communicated informally through a third party, but until they [make a formal submission], we cannot count it as a proposal,” he said.

The discussions to date had been conducted primarily via WhatsApp, but the minister is insisting on a formal proposal to "better understand" Apple's commitment.
